Steve Gaalema, Ph.D, PRESIDENT

Steve Gaalema received his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Purdue University in 1976, where he demonstrated the first acoustic charge transport device. His subsequent experience includes CCD star tracker development at JPL. He was also integral to the development of Si and Ge IR detectors; integrated readout electronics for Si, Ge, InSb, and HgCdTe detectors; and cryogenic packaging and signal processing for Hughes Aircraft. He was responsible for the development of several IC processes at Hughes, and in cooperation with Orbit Semiconductor, the buried channel CCD/CMOS process now offered through the MOSIS service. The Company

BFE employs 15 engineers, an office manager and an IT technician.  Their design expertise coupled with the use of many of the industry standard verification tools has enabled BFE to provide solutions to the non-standard requirements of its customers.  BFE also has relationships with several consultants who have provided useful man power and specialized design ability for a number of projects.

Investing in the Future

A very exciting technology that is becoming ever closer to commercial realization is the use of bio luminescence in detecting disease in blood samples.  Unlike current conventional methods, this method would allow one hundred tests to be run on a single sample of blood.  For a number of years Black Forest Engineering has helped in developing the visible sensor IC that detects the emissions from the luminescent molecules with coordination of Prolume.  Recently BFE has partnered with Prolume and BP Proteomics to form Beacon Biotechnology.

The DaVinci Award

An excerpt of a recent memo tells of how Beacon Biotechnology's progress is earning more interest.  "On the evening of Monday, Nov 10th, we participated in the DaVinci Institute's Colorado Inventor Showcase and presented the BrightSPOT Reader platform along with several dozen other participants. Beacon was awarded the 2008 Inventor of the Year award and will have an article published about us in the Feb '09 issue of Colorado BIZ magazine."
